Apartment Lee: A Minimalist Transformation

Preserving Memories and Embracing Change

Inherited from the elders, the young couple lives in a twenty-two square footage apartment that is situated in the metropolitan area of Taipei City. The owners wanted to refurnish the residence to reflect their own style. Chin-Yun Kuo, a renowned designer, took on the challenge of transforming the space while preserving the original furniture and creating a home filled with memories and emotion.

The Apartment Lee project presented a unique opportunity for Chin-Yun Kuo to blend tradition and innovation. The request was to transform an old home that originally belonged to the owner's parents into a space more suitable for a young couple. The designer advocated for minimal design, less fixed woodwork, and more changeable construction to transform old pieces. This approach not only utilized Mr. Lee's precious mementos that had been passed down through generations but also minimized unnecessary waste.

The project revolved around several simple and movable mechanisms. One notable feature was a visual wall that could be easily flipped for different styles. Another innovative element was a workshop that could be transformed into a guest room using a hidden old bed. Additionally, a custom space was created for old storage cases. Beyond the housing renovation, Chin-Yun Kuo utilized construction resources to build many removable, reusable, and replaceable pieces of custom furniture using whatever material was left over.

The realization of the Apartment Lee design was achieved through the use of terrazzo, a versatile material known for its durability and aesthetic appeal. This choice not only added a touch of elegance to the space but also ensured longevity and ease of maintenance.

The designer's main idea for this portfolio was to create a home that prioritized living over showcasing refurnishing skills. It was crucial to preserve the original furniture and infuse the space with memories and emotion. By incorporating the least number of elements, Chin-Yun Kuo successfully transformed the apartment into a place that truly felt like home.

The Apartment Lee project, located in SongShan District, Taipei, Taiwan, spanned from November 2014 to November 2015. Throughout the process, the designer faced the challenge of preserving the old furniture while creating functional and multi-purpose pieces. The result was a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

The Apartment Lee design received recognition for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Apartment Lee design stood out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
